After two vacations surrounded by friends or extended family, we felt the need to spend a few days in a close family circle – just mom, dad, and little 'A,' while 'T' was safely tucked away in the belly. We hadn’t had a proper trip in two years, and this was already our third vacation this year. We decided to enjoy a few days of late summer in the picturesque Beskydy Mountains. It’s not far from Brno, and we also needed to be near Karviná for a family event over the weekend.
And of course, we’re camping again. This time we set our sights on a campsite in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, managed by the city's technical services, making it a municipal campsite. The first day, we just settled into our camping spot and explored the town. We needed to figure out where to go in the morning for fresh bread for breakfast. Evenings were already chilly, but the fire we made in our portable grill warmed us up and set the perfect atmosphere, nicely preparing us for sleep. Few people can resist the charm of a flickering fire and the sound of the Lubina River flowing near our tent.

It’s Wednesday, the school year has already started, and there are far fewer people around. Today’s goal is the highest peak of the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy - Lysá hora. We chose the route from Visalaje, which is about 8 km long and is one of the most popular ascent routes. After a quick check of our food and water supplies, raincoats, windbreakers, a spare outfit for ‘A,’ and of course the baby carrier, we set off. We parked the car near the Visalaje cottage. ‘A’ bravely trotted along, while ‘T’ happily floated in the belly. We stopped here and there, refueled with some snacks, and continued. The path is truly beautiful, although some sections are more challenging – depending on who you ask. Dad, who must have been a mountain goat in a previous life, climbs everywhere with ease, while ‘A’ follows wherever dad goes, and mom, like a puffing locomotive, trails behind them. We can already see the peak, but we also see the steep slope leading up to it – but we won’t give up now. Just a little more! We made it. The view from the 1,323-meter summit was a well-deserved reward for all our effort. A well-earned rest and refreshment – beer, lemonade, ice cream – and we let ‘A’ run around for a bit so she would sleep on the way back. Then, down we go. Now just a drive back to the campsite, cook dinner, and snuggle into our sleeping bags.
A new day has dawned, and with it a trip to Pustevny and the Valaška trail. We’ve been to Pustevny several times, but the Valaška trail wasn’t there yet. We left the car at the Ráztoka parking lot and headed toward the chairlift to Pustevny. It’s a two-seater lift, so mom went with ‘A,’ and dad carried the backpack. We’ve been on the lift before, so this time we rode like pros, and ‘A’ even managed to make funny faces at dad riding behind us. At the top, we gracefully disembarked and headed straight for the trail. ‘A’ climbed everywhere, not missing a single swaying bridge, climbing wall, or trampoline. The trail is less than a kilometer long, but for kids, it’s great fun. After yesterday’s hike, we also appreciated it and enjoyed the relaxation. When we reached the lookout at the end, it was clear that the weather forecast was going to be right – rain was coming. We quickly checked out the sand sculptures at Pískoles and sought shelter in a restaurant by the lift. Dad made the sacrifice of going out in the now heavy rain to buy frgály (traditional sweet pastries). Waiting for the rain to stop made no sense, so we took the lift down. We wrapped ‘A’ in a raincoat, and we toughed it out – we could change in the car. Oh, that lift goes so slowly, and the rain was getting heavier. Everything was soaked, really everything. Well, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. In the car, we performed some acrobatic feats trying to undress without soaking what was still dry and getting into something dry. Dad is two meters tall, and mom has a belly. ‘A’ thoroughly enjoyed the show, and so did we. We laughed like crazy.
So, what to do with the rest of the day? We checked the weather and headed toward the Šance Reservoir. But ‘A’ fell asleep in the car. No problem, she’ll wake up when we stop, like she always does. Wrong. We sat in the parked car for forty-five minutes; no one had the heart to wake the peacefully sleeping child. And when we finally went to check out the dam, ‘A’ didn’t like it at all because it was windy. So, this stop wasn’t a big hit. We tried to make up for it by visiting the Wooden Sculpture Paradise in Ostravice. That was a bullseye. The carved animals were a big hit, especially the little fox, which looked almost real.
After a relatively quiet day, we tackled the hills again. We conquered Velký Javorník, whose peak is at an altitude of 918 meters, and climbed its lookout tower, from which we had a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. ‘A’ climbed up the lookout tower on all fours by herself and was rightfully proud of herself – and so were we. We did run into a bit of trouble at the refreshment stand when we realized we didn’t have any cash, and card payments weren’t accepted. Our last coins went toward an ice cream for the little traveler. The parents then satisfied their taste buds with local specialties at the Rekovice Inn in Horečky. We could hardly believe it when the waitress greeted us with, "Welcome to the municipal inn." We felt more like we were in a fancy restaurant, and the food was excellent.
This vacation wasn’t just about exploring the stunning nature of the Beskydy Mountains but also about strengthening our family bonds. Every day was full of laughter, discoveries, and little adventures that we will remember for the rest of our lives. Despite the minor challenges, we enjoyed every moment to the fullest. We had an amazing time and are already looking forward to more adventures with our daughter, and soon with our son as well.
Thank you!
