This Christmas, new toys arrived in our home – a walking puppy and a set of ponies. The kids quickly found new favorites, but soon we ran into a little “practical” problem. The new friends had no place to live. No doghouse, no stable, not even a small enclosure. So, we got creative together.
We used what we had on hand – pieces from our family game and building set, a piece of plywood as the floor, and a roof made from a paper gift bag – and in no time, the new toys had their own cozy space. Not only were the kids thrilled, but they also came up with the whole idea themselves and built it with just a little help from us.
That moment reminded us once again why we love our wooden family game and building set so much – its versatility. It’s a game that doesn’t end with one instruction manual. The pieces don’t serve just a fixed purpose – they adapt to the child’s imagination. Today it’s a doghouse or stable, tomorrow it might be a garage, a harbor, a space station, or even a dinosaur cave. The possibilities are endless – all it takes is a bit of imagination, from the kids… and sometimes from us too.
What we love even more is how it can be combined with other toys. For example, a space base – built from wooden pieces, expanded with a shuttle from a popular plastic building set from Denmark, and tiny astronauts from chocolate egg surprises – suddenly becomes a full-blown moon mission. Kids create entire new worlds where nothing is pre-set. And that’s often the best kind of play.
We have to admit – we’re not fans of clutter. Especially items made for just one purpose. You know how it goes – every commercial toy comes with its own special accessories, house, cart, stand, garage, and so on. And if you have three kids with different interests like we do, the kids’ room would have to be the size of a small sports complex (okay, maybe we’re exaggerating – but you get the idea).
That’s why we appreciate things that are flexible and have long-term value. That don’t bore children, because they let them create something new every time. That aren’t just about “playing by the rules,” but allow them to invent their own worlds.
And when something doesn’t quite work out? No problem. It’s not about perfection – it’s about the joy of creating. And about helping children see things differently – that they don’t need to buy new accessories for every toy, but can use what they already have.
If you’re looking for something that will grow with your children, keep them entertained and help them develop – maybe it doesn’t have to be a brand-new toy. Maybe it’s just about a fresh perspective on the ones you already have at home.
